Entry 3: 8 steps to informational writing- the writing process
In this session, we looked at "the 8-step writing process"
Initially, we
are taught that the 8 steps of writing are idea, think, tie idea and reader, gather
information, study, design, write, and edit. Here is a breakdown of each step
Step 1
Idea
you need an idea, a subject that you feel needs to be done, or that, for a
legitimate reason, you want to do. Have an idea clearly in your mind before you
move forward. Everything that follows will be easier because the right idea
sets the right course.
Step 2
Think
Think carefully about your reader and how, to best serve him or her, you
should apply the idea and have it come to a fruitful life. Make sure the idea
fits the wants and/or needs of your reader.
Step 3
Tie Idea and Reader
Take an additional step; strive to tie the idea and reader together, by
fashioning a concept, meaning a more specific subject, an idea narrowed into a
circumscribed and focused topic, one you think is tailor-made for that reader
of yours.
Step 4
Gather Information
Do your information gathering, your reporting, your researching, your
observing, your experiencing, your interviewing. The more thoughtfully and
thoroughly you gather, the more useful information you'll have to choose from,
thereby potentially giving the reader a better, richer, more complete product.
Step 5
Study
Study the material you've gathered. Determine content. Decide what to use
and how to use it. Select what's interesting and important and will
develop the story's purpose. Select what's not and won't.
Step 6
Design
Design your article-to-be. Give it architecture, a form, a shape, a
structure. Work for a sense of direction and informational flow.
Step 7
Write
only then at that point, write.
Step 8
Edit
Test what you've written for correctness, clarity, concision, cohesion,
completeness, and communicative comfort. Test it with eyes and ears. Help
yourself by reading the copy aloud, that way to better catch what's wrong or
weak.
The process consists of eight steps.
--Don't skip.
--Don't shortchange.
--Don't rush.
Research shows that, whether
you're a professional writer or a student working on an assignment, the 8-step
writing process can help you produce high-quality content. This process
provides a road map for developing your ideas, organizing your thoughts, and
refining your work.
Step 1: Pre-Writing- before
you start writing, it's essential to gather your thoughts. Brainstorm ideas,
research your topic, and create an outline. Pre-writing helps you establish a
clear direction for your writing.
Step 2: Understanding
the Audience- Consider who your audience is and what they need from your
content. Knowing your readers' preferences, expectations, and level of
expertise will influence your writing style and tone.
Step 3: Setting
Objectives- Define the purpose of your writing. Are you trying to inform,
persuade, entertain, or educate? Clearly outlining your goals will guide your
content's structure and message.
Step 4: Drafting- Once
you have a solid plan, it's time to start writing your first draft. Don't worry
too much about perfection at this stage; focus on getting your ideas on paper.
Step 5: Revising-
Revision is where your writing truly takes shape. Review your draft for
clarity, coherence, and organization. Make improvements, rephrase sentences,
and add or remove content as needed.
Step 6: Editing- Editing
involves checking for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Pay attention
to sentence structure and word choice. This is the phase where your writing
becomes polished and error-free.
Step 7: Proofreading-
Proofreading is the final check for any remaining errors. It's essential to
read your work carefully to ensure it's flawless. You can also have someone else
review your content for a fresh perspective.
Step 8: Final Review- Before
you consider your work complete, take a step back and review the entire piece.
Ensure that it aligns with your initial objectives and effectively addresses
your target audience.
By following this 8-step writing process, you are sure to create content that is well-structured,
engaging, and error-free. Writing is a skill that improves over time with
practice, so do not be discouraged if your first attempt is not perfect. Keep reusing
the process and enhancing your skills, and you will become a more confident and
effective writer as well as your students. Keep in mind that each step is important and
contributes to the overall quality of your work. Therefore, even if it is an essay,
report, or blog post, take the time to go through each step methodically. Your

Thank you so much for explaining the eight steps in writing. The way in which each step is subdivided and that there is emphasis on careful editing, careful planning, and concerned audience makes me like it. As for the quality of created content, I understand that all stages should be performed and there must not be a shortcut at all. These observations agree with the research on benefits of the method to both experts and learners. I will ensure that my students apply this holistic approach to enhance their writing skills.
